Understand the key idea

Prefixes and suffixes in Year 3 help children build and understand longer words. A prefix goes on the front of a word and usually changes its meaning, so "un" turns happy into unhappy. A suffix goes on the end and often changes the job the word does in a sentence, so "ly" turns quick into quickly. Once children can spot the root word underneath, longer words stop looking frightening.

What suffixes are taught in Year 3?

A suffix is a group of letters added to the end of a root word. Common Year 3 work includes endings such as -ness, -ful, -less, -ly, -ment and -ation, alongside verb endings such as -ed and -ing. The suffix can change meaning or word class: happy becomes happiness, care becomes careful or careless, and excite becomes excitement.

A prefix is added to the beginning instead. Prefixes such as un-, dis-, mis-, re- and super- often change meaning while leaving the root visible. Asking children to box the prefix or suffix and underline the root helps them decode and spell longer words.

Spelling changes to watch

The root does not always stay unchanged. A final consonant may double before a vowel suffix, as in forget and forgetting. A final e may be removed before -ing, as in hope and hoping. A consonant followed by y often changes to i before some suffixes, as in happy and happiness, but the y stays before -ing, as in copying.

Instead of learning each long word separately, compare related word families and say which rule applies. This builds a reusable spelling strategy and makes dictionary checking more purposeful.

Common mix-up

Adding a suffix sometimes changes the spelling of the root, which is where most mistakes happen. Words ending in a consonant plus y usually swap the y for an i, so happy becomes happiness rather than happyness.

Try this first

  1. Take one root word and build as many versions of it as you can.
  2. Underline the root inside a long word before trying to read or spell it.
  3. Sort words into those where the root stayed the same and those where it changed.
