Round Up Down Decimals

When do you round a decimal up or down?

Find the digit you are rounding to, then look at the digit immediately to its right. If that next digit is 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9, increase the rounding digit by one. If it is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4, keep the rounding digit unchanged and remove the digits after it.

Worked examples

  • 3.46 to one decimal place is 3.5 because the next digit is 6, so 4 rounds up.
  • 7.42 to one decimal place is 7.4 because the next digit is 2, so 4 stays the same.
  • 12.5 to the nearest whole number is 13 because 5 rounds up.

Examples: 8.73 → 8.7 to 1 decimal place · 6.58 → 6.6 to 1 decimal place
