Understand the key idea

A strong Year 9 investigation goes beyond running a fair test. You judge whether the method was valid, whether repeats are close enough to be precise, whether readings are accurate, and whether any result is a genuine anomaly. A conclusion should state the pattern, quote supporting data, and say how confident the evidence allows you to be.

Worked ramp-height and toy-car investigation plan

Question: how does ramp height affect the distance a toy car travels after leaving the ramp? The independent variable is ramp height. The dependent variable is travel distance, measured from the ramp end to the car's stopping point. Keep the same car, ramp surface and length, release position, floor surface and measuring method as control variables. Use a release gate rather than pushing the car so each trial begins consistently.

Test at least five ramp heights. Repeat each height at least three times, record every reading and calculate a mean. Mark an anomalous reading only when there is a defensible reason, such as the car striking an obstacle, and retain the raw value in the table. A metre rule aligned with the travel path and read at eye level improves accuracy; repeated close readings show precision; repeats and a mean improve reliability.

Evaluate safety, validity and the conclusion

Keep the track clear, secure the ramp and stop the car before it reaches feet or furniture. Validity depends on changing only ramp height while controlling other causes of distance. Calibration and a clear measurement rule support accuracy; closely grouped repeats indicate precision but do not guarantee accuracy. Reliability concerns whether the pattern is repeatable.

Plot mean distance against ramp height, describe the pattern and quote values. If the means rise, the evidence supports the conclusion that increasing ramp height increased travel distance under these conditions. It does not prove a universal law: the tested car, surfaces, height range and uncertainty limit the claim.

Common mix-up

Accuracy and precision are not the same. Repeat readings can cluster tightly together and still be precise but inaccurate if the equipment was set up or zeroed wrongly.

Try this first

  1. Identify an anomalous result in a table and decide whether to exclude it.
  2. Suggest one improvement that increases accuracy and one that increases precision.
  3. Write a conclusion that quotes two figures from the data.

Ask: If three repeats agree closely, does that prove the answer is right?
