Understand the key idea

In a chemical reaction, atoms are rearranged but never created or destroyed, so the total mass of the products equals the total mass of the reactants. The same is true for changes of state, because the particles are unchanged and only their arrangement differs.

Common mix-up

When a mass appears to fall — such as wood burning away — no mass has been lost. Gases have escaped to the surroundings, and mass only appears constant when the reaction is done in a sealed container.
